With a pension fund valued at approximately $123 billion, TRS serves over 274,000 members, providing them with retirement, disability, and death benefit services. We seek dedicated professionals who are passionate about public work and committed to excellence and member-focused service. Position Summary: Our Summer Internship Program offers students the opportunity to gain rewarding work experience, while also making important contributions to the City of New York. During the program, interns will support departmental projects, work alongside experienced professionals, and participate in enrichment activities such as networking events and training workshops. The Loans & TDA (Tax-Deferred Annuity) unit is seeking four (4) motivated and detail-oriented students to join the team for the spring and summer. If you have an interest in accounting, finance, or retirement planning, and enjoy working with data and processes that require precision and accuracy, this opportunity is perfect for you!

Key Responsibilities:

As an intern, you will assist in reviewing and processing a high volume of RMD-related documentation, ensuring accuracy and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Loan and Withdrawal Review: Assist the team in reviewing loan and withdrawal applications. Your keen eye for detail will ensure that all requests are processed efficiently and accurately.
  • Data Cleanup: Participate in ongoing data quality and cleanup efforts related to loans and withdrawals. You will help review, classify, and organize work items according to defined criteria, contributing to the overall efficiency and accuracy of our systems.
  • Project Support: Contribute to various departmental initiatives and assist other accounting teams with their projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year). NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.

Preferred Skills:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Accounting, Business or a related field.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • High level of integrity and professionalism when handling sensitive financial data.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness:

As a prospective employee of the City of New York, you may be eligible for federal loan forgiveness programs and state repayment assistance programs. For more information, please visit the U.S. Department of Education's website.

Residency Requirement:

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
